When I tucked the handwritten songs in a box more than thirty years ago, it was mostly for sentimental reasons. (I have boxes and boxes of sentiment - it's a sickness...I can't get rid of anything!) However, a teensy voice inside my head said, "Hmmm...he'll probably be famous one day...I wonder if these will be worth something?"
So I really wasn't surprised when I read the email from my old friend Nathan that his band, Mission Texas, has a website now, and that they've been playing in the Houston area a lot. Nathan was never far from his guitar back in high school, and he's been in bands before. It's just hard to pursue your dream around shift-work and family, as I well know.
I'm going to add him to my "I knew you when..." list, and try to see them perform at the Pasadena Rodeo BBQ Cook-off on September 27 outside of Houston.
I wonder which box I put those songs in...
(Here's Nathan on his seventeenth birthday circa 1976...I bet he's wishing that he'll still be playing the guitar and singing in a band even when he gets old, like forty-nine or fifty...and look! his wish came true!!)
