What a strange, wonderful world it is...
Almost forty years after I sat in a darkened room for two hours, listening to music, hoping for yet fearing my very first kiss from the boy sitting next to me - a kiss that never materialized because we were both too shy to talk, much less kiss - I impulsively sent a Facebook message..."Do you remember me?"
I wouldn't have been surprised if he didn't. We talked a few times after that mortifying experience, but the last time was thirty years ago or more.
But he did remember me, and was even happy to hear from me! Whatever had kept us from being able to talk to each other before had crumbled away. Now we realized how much alike we are, how much we have in common, how many memories we share of our old neighborhood.
Because of our new-found friendship, I discovered another new friend as well - his wife. And we didn't stop there - we looped Tom into it as well. It was such a surprising experience for all of us, to stumble upon such special relationships like this after all these years. You just never know what gifts life has stashed away for you, waiting for just the right moment to bring them out.
Happy Birthdays, Robert and Shari! I'm so grateful for our friendship!
