It's tough moving somewhere new, trying to make friends and connections. But I was lucky - within a few weeks of moving to Lago Vista (was it even that long?) I met Nancy, and from that moment on, Lago was home.
Even though she had to move away just a few years later, our connection held - surprising in a way because we didn't have the normal bonds like blood or longtime shared memories that are usually necessary to cement a friendship through a separation.
But we had a connection - like the Willow Tree figurines she gave me for my birthday a few years ago, we're "Sisters by Heart"...(I kept the one on the right and sent the other one back with her. It only seemed right.)
We packed a lot of memories and emotion into those few short years...enough to bide us through the dry times when we were so busy working and raising kids that we were lucky to see each other once a year. And now that the kids are older, our determination is growing, and slowly but surely we're finding ways to fit in more and more visits.
I wish today was one of those days - it's Nancy's 45th birthday. We'll just have to wait and celebrate our birthdays together in Port Aransas in a few weeks. Till then, happy birthday Sister by Heart!
