Back when I was in junior high, no slumber party was complete without a scavenger hunt, when you divided up into teams going door to door through the neighborhood gathering up things like safety pins and matchboxes from Taco Bueno. The first team to gather everything on the list won.
One specific scavenger hunt stands out in my mind ...
... It was Colleen Walker's slumber party. My team was working our way down Grant Street, I believe, when our knock on one door was answered by Quentin from Dark Shadows. I swear it was Quentin. It looked just like him, sideburns and all.
We all gasped and took a step back. He just gazed at us; we were entranced. One of us gathered up the nerve to ask him for a bobby pin. (Probably not me - I was numb from fear. I believe this was shortly after a group of us sat on the front row of the theater watching House of Dark Shadows, the movie based on the scary soap - still one of the scariest movies of all times to me ... mostly because I can't remember anything about it except lots of blood and being scared!)
Anyway, Quentin just slowly shook his head "no" and we wasted no more time (after all, we wanted to win!) - we ran off to the next house for the bobby pin, probably screaming all the way, because that would make it more fun.
