Mermaid of the Tree

Hurricane Ike destroyed about 40,000 trees in Galveston. By transforming the trunks into whimsical creatures like this mermaid, chainsaw artists have given new life to the trees and lifted the spirits of island residents.

I passed this mermaid on a stroll through Ann's historical neighborhood this past weekend. The yards look so empty without the magnificent old trees, but the sculpture was a wonderful surprise and for me, a symbol of survival and hope for this wonderful, stubborn old town.
